Meet a Garden Valley Jewel Have you ever thought about packing up every item you own and moving to a place where you don’t know a soul? Most people can imagine doing such a thing, but few act on it. I admire people who create change and then embrace it as an adventure, because for me, this kind of change would happen only if I had to become part of a witness protection program. For Gary and Shelly Kayser, it was a dream come true to move to Garden Valley. Last year they loaded up their five horses, Biscuit, Butter, Sugar, Chili, and Yukon, along with their dog and two cats, and moved here from Cincinnati, Ohio. I looked up Ohio on my U.S. map and counted five large states between here and there. The two thousand mile journey took four days and three nights traveling time and more than a week afterwards to recover. On top of being brave adventurers, both Gary and Shelly are animal lovers, which scored them even more points in my book. A blessing for our valley, Shelly is a certified master dog groomer with 30 years of experience. She owns and operates a grooming shop located on Middle Fork Road, and in a short time has built a good business by word of mouth. She tells me the dogs in Garden Valley are happy dogs. She compares them to the people here, and I understand what she means. We mountain folk are happy to be free of population pressures. No tiny yards with tall fences for us. No way. Shelly can read animals as quickly and easily as a teenager can text message. What impresses me most about her way with animals is that she takes charge by guiding and leading, never forcing. Her gentleness and patience remains constant throughout the entire grooming process. As soon as I get my little cattle dog (I hope, I hope), I will take her to Shelly’s shop for a wash, a clip, and a cute bandana tied around her nice clean neck.
